One of our little laughs is that we’d rather have a foot of tide here in the Outer Banks than an inch of snow. Hatteras Island is where I grew up. It’s the most eastern point of the whole of the USA and we’re famous here for the sheer amount of ships that have met their end on these shores.
My dad was a fisherman and we grew up on seafood. As a young child, stewed shrimp was always so delicious. I learned to cook with my father and his mother, my grandmother. This was her recipe to begin with and has been passed down to me. We make this stew because it makes sense in this part of the world. People come here to Hatteras from all over to fish. I’m only just now learning how to make meat dishes. I crave a clam and a shrimp more than I ever have a fried pork chop or a hamburger.
